Udawalawe Mobile Safari Camping

The Udawalawe National Park is the 3rd largest Park in the country. It is recognized as an important habitat for water birds and Sri Lankan Elephants. The driveway to the Park is through the Udawalawe Reservoir with the picturesque Sabaragamuwa mountain range in the backdrop.

The Udawalawe National Park is home to over 43 species of mammals and 184 species of birds of which 33 species are migratory, along with 135 species of butterflies amongst many more.

The mixed habitats of the park include grasslands, scrublands, marshlands and tropical jungle. The large herds of Elephants seen feeding on the vast grasslands and at the many waterholes of Udawalawe is a picture perfect sight, along with deer, crocodile and many species of birds.

The Udawalawe Classic Safari Camp is a mobile camp situated within the National Park itself, thereby allowing visitors to experience an authentic jungle camping experience. Waking up right in the middle of the jungle to the sounds of the wild and cheerful bird song is a rare luxury by itself, something many dream of and only a fortunate few really experience. It is all about living in the wilds of Sri Lanka with only the wildlife for company.

The tents are spacious and comfortable with inviting beds and crispy clean linen, solar powered lamps with washroom and shower situated alongside.

Mornings at the campsite are picture postcard perfect. Be greeted by drifts of cool breeze and curtains of greenery, music wafting from the tree tops and a hot cup of tea or coffee and if you wish you can take a cool dip in the river that flows by the campsite. Be treated to authentic Sri Lankan cuisine freshly cooked in our jungle kitchen. Breakfast will be served on the banks of the river, so you eat virtually seated in the water with your feet enjoying the cool vibes.

After a wild safari in the park, the nights at the campsite lit with hurricane lamps and copra torches is indeed welcoming. Be greeted to a delectable Sri Lankan dinner served out in the open or gather around the roaring campfire with a cool beer in hand and enjoy a tantalizing BBQ.

Being situated right inside the Park gives guests the advantage of starting off on the safari long before the others arrive, which means avoiding the crowds and having a greater opportunity to enjoy the wildlife firsthand.

Most importantly, while you enjoy the luxury camping experience a number of village folk living in the vicinity of the park too benefit from this exercise. As a sustainable self employment project they supply the campsite with home grown vegetables and fruits along with fresh meat, poultry, eggs and fish.

Living under canvas in a wild world of your own is certainly a unique experience, everything here is done nature’s way and we just add in the comfort, safety & security and an authentic jungle camping experience.
