The Common Mormon (Papilio polytes) is a common species of the swallowtail butterfly widely found across Asia. It is a jet black butterfly with a row of white streaks, measuring 90 – 100 mm. The fore wings and the hind wings are black in colour with the hind wings having tails. The females have a whitish area with prominent black veins in the forewing. Their popular habitats are tropical rain forests, agricultural fields, suburban home gardens and even the metropolis. The Common Male Mormon when in need of water drinks from puddles, streams and other substances that carry moisture.
